11 – Architects of Fear

a sinister figure in an alley

Agents in black suits, the tingling at the back of your neck, and things that go bump in the night. This song could be about them all — or maybe just an overactive imagination. You decide.

Lyrics

Smoke and mirrors

Games of chess you can not win

Feigned indifference

When you catch their eye

At the subway station

They’re ten feet back and to the right

Never drawing closer

Never falling far behind

DON’T TURN AWAY

THERE’S NOTHING OUT THERE ANYWAY

NOTHING THAT’S FOR REAL

TO TOUCH SEE OR FEEL

JUST DO WHAT YOU DO

AS IF THEY WERE NOT WATCHING YOU

EVER GROWING NEAR

THE ARCHITECTS OF FEAR

Take a drive at midnight

A lonely road, a quiet town

Nothing out of place

But nothing still quite right

It’s the darkest feeling

When you’ve see a stranger all day long

Never drawing closer

Never falling far behind

CHORUS: repeat

(bridge)

CHORUS: repeat

Notes

Deadlines can be cruel masters and such is the story of this version of Architects of Fear. The band was working furiously to complete the album and get it to Bruce Miller for mixing. As such, we simply didn’t have enough time to work out a solid “studio” version of this song.

Jay loved the very first take we’d ever done of it and advocated its inclusion on the CD as a “lo-fi” version. I was never too keen on it because I felt my singing wasn’t up to par. I was literally reading the lyrics from the sheet and improvising bits of the melody as we recorded it. Jay feels that made for a very natural delivery — I only hear innumerable things that could’ve been corrected with just a few rehearsals. However, time ran out so Jay’s preference prevailed; and what you hear on the album is the very first take — warts and all.

I hope we have a chance to re-record this song some day…
