Lyrics

Some only see darkness in life
They spend there days mired deep in strife
They watch the news and see only woes
But I’ve never been one of those

I’M ONE WITH THE SUN
I’M ONE WITH THE SUN

I SPLIT THE NIGHT AND I WASH IT AWAY
I LEAVE THE STARS WITH NOTHING TO SAY

You’ll get a tan when I come in the room
Your spirits soar, your prospects bloom
I’m hell on wheels in a bar room fight
No one can touch me, I’m too damn bright

CHORUS: REPEAT

Round and round, day to day
Smiling like a fool
Never know quite why

(solo)

There’ll come a day when my light will fade
My spirit’s gone, my body decayed
But don’t you worry, I’ll not be far
Just take a glance at the closest star

Round and round, day to day
Smiling like a fool
Never know quite why

I’M ONE WITH THE SUN (x6)

Notes

People consistently tell us that this is our most “modern” sounding song even though it’s little more than an updated Motown piece. Odd…

Notes

Unlike most of my work I can tell you exactly when and where I wrote this piece. In Old Town Alexandria, at the corner of King and Patrick Streets, while walking my dog, the entire thing just came to me. Lyrics, melody, it was all there. The band brushed it up a bit and added a bridge but the basics were all there right from the start. – Fitz

Lyrics

Send a card out
Wash it away
Just words with nothing to say
Empty nights stretch endlessly
That’s all, all you mean to me
All you mean to me
All you mean to me

Years go by
Where do I go?
I Stalk the city like a faint shadow
Empty nights stretch endlessly
That’s all, all you mean to me
All you mean to me
All you mean to me

Lovers come and lover go

They last as long as the summer snow
A different face and a different name
But to me they’re all the same…

(solo)

The day ends
The sun hangs low

I share my dinner with a TV show
Empty nights stretch endlessly
That’s all, all, that’s all you mean to me

All you mean to me
All you mean to me
All you mean to me
All you mean to me…

Notes

Featuring a blend of R&B, hip-hop, and lounge Empty Nights really hit the “Film Noir” vibe we were shooting for on this album.

When Jay and I first started arranging it Apple had just released the first version of GarageBand. That program really took us in different directions. We discarded the idea of a live drumming in favor of drum loops, which in turn prompted Jay to throw down a bass line that was much busier and more complicated than we typically used. We poured back in his tremolo guitar, the vocals and some sparse keyboards and ta-da! One Retromod torch song in the can.

Sinister figures never relax

GIVE ME A RIDE TO NEPTUNE CITY
WHERE LIFE’S ELECTRIC AND PEOPLE PRETTY
NEPTUNE CITY WHERE SHADOWS CALL
JUST CAN’T SEEM TO FIND MY WAY AT ALL

Beneath the waves, sirens sing
Beautiful songs, beautiful dreams
A sailor that drowns in their embrace
Dies with a smile on his scruffy face

CHORUS: REPEAT

(bridge)

Thanks for stopping, I could use the ride
I’ve been trapped in the strangest tide

The closer I get to being free
The further I’m drawn
The further I’m drawn… out to the sea

Out to the sea
Out to the sea
Out to the sea

Out to the sea…

Notes

This lyrics for this song were originally provided by Arthur Gilbert and then later reworked to fit the melody. Here is the original version:

Along the coast the mermaids
Are stacked inside glass jars

That they display on counter tops
In rundown seaside bars

Where you can stare at them for hours
Until you’re seeing stars
In the end your as close to them
As the Earth is to Mars

CAN YOU GIVE ME A RIDE
TO NEPTUNE CITY

WHERE THE GIRLS ARE PRETTY
IN NEPTUNE CITY

The preying mantis eats it mate
But its just having fun
In the arcade the ladies lie
Like reptiles in the sun

Casanova longs to touch them

In oceanic dreams
While in the world of flesh and bone
Nothing is as it seems

CHORUS: REPEAT

Beneath the swamp lovely sirens sing
Songs no human can deny
Sailors submerged in their embrace
Have come to see them die

Harlequin pulls the curtain shut
That hides the made machines
Concealing reality
That’s bursting from the seams

Show me the way to Neptune City
Beneath the waves of Neptune City

Lyrics

Sandy Strange bought a house
Four doors from my own
A ramshackle rotting place
Once a palace home

She sits up in the window
Bathed in candle light

A pixie smile across her face
Casting thru the night

Leaves swirling at her feet
The coldness of the air
Wind across her pale face
The darkness of her hair

QUITE A CHANGE, QUITE A STRIDE
SOMETHING YOU CAN FEEL INSIDE
MIDNIGHT TAKES ANOTHER BRIDE
WHEN SANDY STRANGE …
PASSES BY

Sandy shops downtown
In weird little stores
She buys the oddest clothing
The kind you can’t ignore

In them she’s cuts quite a form
Hovering down the street
Her snakey shape an opium
To every eye she meets

QUEEN OF THE CATHODE RAY
PRETTY TO LOOK AT, NOT MUCH TO SAY

Since she left high school
She’s never missed a beat
She’s an avalanche of photographs
With the fans all at her feet

As shallow as a contact lense

Lyrics

Dance across a dark roof top
Girders, vents, you never stop
Looking down on those below
They don’t see, me they don’t know
They don’t know, don’t know

Midnight battles in the air
Blows and strikes from everywhere
Never run it thru your mind
Life up here leaves no time
To think, To think

AND YOU KNOW JUST WHAT YOU NEED, WHEN IT ALL GOES WRONG
AND YOU KNOW JUST WHAT YOU NEED, WHEN IT ALL GOES WRONG

AND YOU KNOW JUST WHAT YOU NEED, WHEN IT ALL GOES WRONG
AND YOU KNOW JUST WHAT YOU NEED, WHEN IT ALL GOES WRONG

Race across an endless night
Jumping ledges taking flight
Duck under a shining moon
Find yourself a little room
To hide, To hide

Dance across a dark roof top
Girders, vents, you never stop
Looking down on those below
They don’t see, me they don’t know
They don’t know, Don’t Know
Don’t know!

CHORUS: REPEAT

Dance across a dark rooftop
At this pace you’ll never stop
Years and years go racing by
Still you stand up on high
And smile, And smile, and smile

Notes

This is a bit of an odd one. This song was the written (and crudely recorded with a sony minidisc) the very first time the band got together. At that time it was Rudie Furgeson on the drums, Steve Garland on bass, and I was singing and playing the piano (Jay on guitar of course). When the new lineup finished re-recording it a year later we hated the way it sounded. It had lost all of its energy and vibe. We kept going back to that original take and wondering how we could recapture its mood.

In a rush to meet the album deadline we came up with the frankenstein hybrid you have here. About half of the instrumentation is sample loops of the original recording, and about half new material. The contrast of these lo-fi and hi-fi parts really seems to work. Humorously, in the first mix that Bruce Miller returned to us he’d done TOO good of a job! You could hardly tell the old from the new. We had to ask him to go back and be less skillful at integrating the parts so they’d stand out.

And Rudie! We’ve looked everywhere to find you. Get in touch with us, please! If anyone out there knows Rudie Fergeson, a drummer from Reston Virginia who occasionally used the stage name DJ Rude, please tell him we’re looking for him.
