Super 8 Camera

Looking to do something interesting for the band in the way of a video I’ve purchased an old Super 8 Film camera on EBay. The guy I work with swears by them and claims they give a great grungy, mysterious look that should suit the Mesmers perfectly. I’ll try it out this weekend and shoot a quick film of the dogs playing in the water.

Anyone out there used one of these before?

Mesmers at O’ Shaughnessy’s Tonight

Yes the BIG ALBUM RELEASE SHOW is next Thursday the 6th, but we will be playing a smaller gig TONIGHT at O’ Shaughnessy’s (was Laughing Lizard Lounge) in Old Town Alexandria. We go on at 9:00 p.m.

Banner for upcoming shows

Got a big banner made at Kinkos for the band. They did a good job. I’d always heard it was important for a band to have a banner to people would know who you were but I never paid it much attention. Then last week Kurt and Jason took up to a bar were some bands were playing and I watched with interests a group who I thought was calling themselves the “Sober Cats”. “Not a bad name” I thought. It went well with the irony of beers in their hands and they had a killer bass player to boot. Only after I talked with the drummer did I learn they were the ”Sobriquets”. Then I decided I better get us a banner before someone mistakes us for the “Messers”, or the “Miss Murs”, or the “Masseurs”, or some such.

Subway Release Party

We’re very excited to announce that we’re having the Subway album release party on May 6th at Freddie’s Beach Bar in Arlington Virginia (see full details here). We’ve played there before and it’s always a great venue. Colorful, lively, and with a great crowd. The party starts at 8:00 and the band will go on for a 45-minute set at 9:00. We hope everyone can make it.

On Last Decade’s Music

The end of the year, and especially the end of the decade has brought all sorts of analysis, hangwringing, and speculation about the ills of the music business and what (if anything) might be done to address them. Personally, I’m rather fond of Joshua M. Brown’s “Why are People Buying Less Music? Because the Music Business Sucks”:

“That’s why the top album sellers of the decade were a fake pop product/trainwreck, a 60’s group with only two of four members still alive and a couple of cowboys. Congratulations American Idol (and everyone who watches it), you succeeded in making everything suck.”

While there are undoubtedly other factors as well, I think his basic take is sound.

Album Went to Mastering

Ah, the album went to mastering today. ‘Bout time! As I’m home sick with a nasty cold I’m finishing up on the CD art. And Jay: good call recommending CD Poster Shop. I think I’m gonna do the first run with them.
