The highly recommended Sound on Sound Magazine has a solid article on modular synthesizers this month. It offers a basic lay of the land and some recommendations on what to consider before diving into the patch cord jungle.
The author reaches the same conclusion I've come to about using a modular: they are very much organic instruments that are "played" with knobs and patch cords to create fascinating sound -- not the dispassionate, cerebral automatons one might imagine.
